On August 24, 2022, EIT Institute for Advanced Study (EIAS) and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou) (“HKSTU(GZ)”) signed a joint PhD student training cooperation agreement.

The signing ceremony was held on the launching campus of HKSTU(GZ) in Nansha District, Guanzhou. EIAS leadership, Prof. Lionel M. Ni, President of HKUST (GZ) and Prof. Wu Jingshen, Vice-President for Teaching and Learning of HKUST (GZ) attended the ceremony and signed the cooperation agreement on behalf of both sides. Wu Kaishun, Associate Vice-President for Research of HKUST (GZ), Wen Weijia, Acting Dean of Function Hub of HKUST (GZ), Fugee Tsung, Acting Dean of Information Hub of HKUST (GZ), Xie Danyang, Acting Dean of Society Hub of HKUST (GZ), Chen min, Head Master of the Redbird MPhil Program (RBM) of HKUST (GZ), and members of the External Cooperation Department of EIAS also attended the signing ceremony.

After a long-term preparation, EIAS and HKUST (GZ) have promptly taken a step forward to train PhD students jointly. By virtue of the unique geographical location and teaching force of HKUST (GZ) and the specific mode of research and talent cultivation of EIAS, conditions will be created to enable students to master research and development ability for cutting-edge technologies.

Academician Chen Shiyi pointed out that a joint PhD student training agreement is a pivotal program to deepen strategic cooperation between HKUST (GZ) and EIAS. The powerful combination of both sides will produce tip-top talent with international competitiveness and practical innovation capability. As one of the institutions part of the new type of research universities in China, he said that EIAS hopes to cooperate closely with HKUST (GZ) in international affairs, international recruitment, and other training programs.

The signing of this strategic cooperation agreement marks a substantial step forward in the Yangtze River Delta-Greater Bay Area cooperation for improving the development of China’s higher education.

During the visit, Academician Chen Shiyi and his delegation also visited the “Campus Brain,” Lecture Hall, Administration Hall, and other campus places.
